Reserves Lose a Nailbiter to Cardigan Mountain

The Marauders Reserves played their most challenging opponent of the season Wednesday and rose to the occasion, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to take the lead against Cardigan Mountain School before succumbing in the final minutes by a 4-3 score.

The Cardigan varsity was skilled and physical, and their opening surge put Hanover on its heels by a 2-0 count ten minutes into the match. The Marauders buckled down and got back into the game, led by Philip Caffrey, Eben Holbrook and Jordan Levin. Caffrey headed home Hanover's first goal, converting a free kick from the right side. A Sawyer Brooks corner kick led to a left-footed rip by Levin to tie the score. Alex Brown, briefly escaping the grasp (literally) of the Cardigan defense, hit a baseline cross to Caffrey for his second goal of the day, and the Marauders took a 3-2 lead.

With fifteen minutes to go, Cardigan toed the game 3-3 despite the efforts of Marauder keeper Brendan Rhim, and midfielders Eben Holbrook and Miles Campbell. With only minutes to play, a long Cardigan free kick eluded a screened Rhim in net, and the home team held on for the win.

"The was a huge improvement over the last time we played at Cardigan," commented Coach Jason Landers. "Cardigan beat Hanover 6-0 two years ago, and the quality of play on the reserves has improved a great deal since then."

Hanover returns to action Saturday with a home game against Coe-Brown at The Pasture at 12:30 p.m. The Marauders will scrimmage the HHS Girls' JV Wednesday at 2:15 on the HHS turf.

Hanover Tops Bedford 1-0 in Division II Showdown

The Marauders played some of their best soccer of the season Saturday, topping visiting Bedford 1-0 in a clash of two of the best teams in NHIAA Division II. The win gives Hanover a record of 8-0-0, making them one of only two teams in the Division without a loss or a tie. They have won twenty games in a row, dating back to the loss to Lebanon early last season.

After a stalemated first half that ended in a scoreless time, the Marauders turned up the heat in the second half and got the game-wining goal from freshman Daniel Hazlett at the 53-minute mark. From there, Hanover manifested a combination of airtight defense and continued offensive pressure to snag a quality win against a very strong opponent.

Under the guidance of Head Coach Stuart Pepper, Bedford has capitalized on a number of resources to evolve into one of the top programs in Division II. After losing their opener to Souhegan by a 1-0 score, the Bulldogs had won seven in a row with a sophomore-studded lineup. They have arrived as one of the best team in the Division, and will remain in the upper echelon for years to come.

Hanover was equal to the challenge, raising their game and demonstrating both composure and depth. The resulting match was one of those rare regular-season confrontations with playoff intensity and big-game quality. Both teams played well, and both left the pitch with the knowledge that it might not be the last time they would meet.

The Shot totals for the first-half were somewhat deceiving: Bedford managed only two shots at the Hanover goal, and they outshot the Marauders, who managed one. Both teams, however, made a number of good opportunities. After a long stretch of midfield sparring, Bedford forward Erik Martel shook loose for a clean shot at the Hanover goal, but his low, hard shot was gobbled up by Stefan Dyroff. Eric Jayne, the subject of a lot of attention by Bedford defenders, broke loose briefly and was surprised to find himself onsides as he approached the goal. His perfunctory shot grazed the top of the crossbar.

Late in the half, Jayne was tripped on the right flank as he turned the corner, and the ensuing free kick whistled through a packed penalty area with no takers. Daniel Hazlett, subbed in up front to replace a continually-improving Isaiah Fariel, raced into the left corner and forced a hand ball on Bulldog keeper Taylor Wallace, who had come off his line to field a ball at the edge of his box, and was forced into the foul by Hazlett's pace and anticipation. That resulting free kick was also a dangerous one, but it came to naught, and the halftime score of 0-0 reflected the tenor of the game.

Hanover wasted no time putting the pressure on Bedford at the start of the second half. They earned three corner kicks in the first ten minutes, and both Matt Barth and Forrest Pratt came close on headers. The Marauders were winning midfield battles as well, and after one tussle involving Eric Jayne and Ben Harris and their Bulldog counterparts, Harris emerged with the ball and slid a masterful lead pass to a streaking Hazlett, who took a touch at the edge of the box, opened his hips, and drove the ball inside the right post for his fourth score of the season.

Bedford battled back, but the Hanover defense was more than equal to the challenge. Connor Bentivoglio and Hayden Pressey-Murray got stronger as the game went on, and Pressey-Murray in particular had a couple of weak-side headers that were crucial. Matt Barth and Robin Smith continued their strong play in the middle. Smith never backed down on 50-50 balls and was flawless in the air. Barth's tackling in close quarters kept the smaller, faster Bulldogs from working free. Finally, Bedford Captain Matt Cote got a great look at the back post and drove a head ball to the opposite lower corner. Stefan Dyroff made an amazing dive to his right, fully extending all 6'6" of himself and pushing the sure goal just wide of the post. With the save, Dyroff announced to the rest of Division II that Hanover's defense is Championship quality, and he's one of the best goalies in the state.

Having absorbed Bedford's best efforts, the Marauders regained the initiative and spend most of the balance of the game pressing for a second goal. Keegan Gantrish nearly scored in a goalmouth scramble, Pedro Celaya was a constant threat, and Bulldog keeper Wallace was the busiest man on the pitch. Bedford had a few thrusts at the death of the match, but Hanover's ability to finish off the game kept the lead safe, and the Marauders celebrated a well-earned statement win.

The weeks ahead are full of challenges for Hanover. They travel to Hollis in a week, and still have the Lebanon derbies lurking on the horizon. Nevertheless, they have done everything asked of them thus far, and remain resolved to continue their hard work to get better, half by half and game by game.

Hanover JVs Beat Bedford 3-0; Seventh Shutout

The Marauder Junior Varsity continued its excellence at both end of the field on Saturday, shutting down a good Bedford JV squad by a 3-0 score. The win gives Hanover a 7-1 record, with seven shutouts and only one goal allowed on the season.

Rocco Linehan gave the Marauders the only goal they needed in the first half, assisted by Alec Murphy. Hanover added two late goals in the second half by Tomas LaPorta (assisted by Jacob LaPoint) and Daniel Slayton, assisted by Daniel Hernandez-Martinez.

The JV has a busy week ahead with a scrimmage Tuesday at The Pasture against the girls' varsity, and on Thursday against the boys' varsity subs. Both games should present interesting challenges for all participating players.

Hanover JV Tops Hartford 5-0

The Marauder Junior Varsity put on a dazzling display under the lights at Merriman-Branch Field Tuesday night, dispatching a good Hartford panel by a 5-0 score. Bouncing back from their disappointing 1-0 loss to Oyster River on Saturday, the Marauders collected their sixth shutout in seven games, and showed excellent spacing and ball control.

Liam Gantrish opened the scoring in the first half, followed by a brace from Rocco Linehan, the first of these assisted by Daniel Hernandez-Martinez. Alex Pratt got the first of his two goals in the second half, heading in a cross from Peter Bensen, and then taking a pass from Daniel Osheyack and ripping a left-footed drive inside the far post.
The Marauders clamored for more, with several near misses, including a drive off the bar by Zach Taylor, and close calls fro Connor Gordon, Eli Connolly, Daniel Wilsonand Xavier Tchana.

Hanover returns to the fray Saturday at Noon against Bedford.

Hanover Halts Hartford Hurricanes 4-1

The Marauders overcame a slow start Tuesday night under the lights to defeat a hard-working Hartford Hurricane squad 4-1 and earn their seventh straight win. Leading 1-0 at halftime, Hanover cranked up the offense right from the start in the second half and cruised to the victory behind goals from Eric Jayne, Ben Harris and Isaiah Fariel.

It was slow going in the first half for the Marauders, not only because of a well-organized Hartford defense, but also because of some tactical naivete that resulted in repeated forays into the heart of a packed-in center of the park. Hanover held an edge in play, but the game was in doubt throughout the first half because of the counterattacking threat of Hartford's excellent striker Rory Skehan. The former Lightning teammate of many of Hanover's seniors, Skehan shook loose for the Hurricanes' only shot of the half, and was dangerous throughout. Hartford's best chance was a long, high free kick into the box by Sam Polas, another Lightning ex-pat, but Stefan Dyroff ranged far off his line to snare the ball in a crowd.

Late in the half, Hanover's patience paid off in a flurry that resulted in a Marauder corner kick. Keegan Gantrish hit a driven ball to the far post, and Eric Jayne rose to meet it and sent it back across the fact of the goal, where it deflected in off of Hurricane defender John Borchert and in, followed closely by Hayden Pressey-Murray. The officials, a source of amazement all night, deemed it an own goal. Fine. Whatever. Hanover had snatched the lead with 27 ticks on the clock, and could fully enjoy the GU buffet during the interval.

The tenor of the game changed dramatically in the second half, and it wasn't a case of Hanover wearing Hartford down. With the best elevens fresh at the resumption of play,
The Marauders took to the wings, which subsequently opened up the center. In came Hanover. Marauding. After several good offensive looks, including a couple of great saves by Jed Sass on Jayne, the Marauders doubled the lead on another corner kick.
Trey Rebman curled one in from the left side and Jayne ghosted in front of Sass and deflected the ball enough for it to lazily trickle into the goal. It was Jayne's eighth goal of the season, and it marked the fifth straight game in which he has scored.

Seconds after the resultant kickoff, the play finally got deep enough into the Hanover end for a penalty to be called on....someone, for........something. Skehan gratefully accepted the alms and expertly ripped the penalty home, pulling a goal back.

Somehow, the lead didn't seem to be in danger. Hanover went back to work calmly and efficiently, and camped in Hartford's half. Somehow, though, they made the field seem huge, switching the ball and exploiting the flanks. Forrest Pratt and Trey Rebman were were tip-toeing on the touchlines, and their quick play facilitated some great shots from the top of the box, by Joe, Carey, By Hayden Pressey-Murray, and then by Ben Harris who hit one of his patented long-range drives from 25 meters past a diving Sass to make the score 3-1. As waves of subs came off the Hanover bench, it wasn't conditioning that kept tilting play to the Marauder end. It was real skill and tactical sense by the reserves that made for some of the best football of the night.
Ryan Brigham and Forest Watkins showed well on the flanks, and Alex Dodds was at his creative best up top. Brendan Barth, who had also given valuable minutes in the first half, was a key factor in orchestrating the offense. Jay Mobilia continued to show well in back.

With a 12-3 edge in shots and a telling 7-1 edge in corners, the match was just about put to bed when Isaiah Fariel entered the game for his first real minutes since injuring his ankle in the season opener. His patient rehabilitation bore fruit at the death of the match. Charlie Umland stepped up and headed a ball down the line in Fariel's direction, and the junior striker turned and hit a long, high drive that tucked under the crossbar with 13 seconds remaining for his first goal of the season. It won't be his last.

Hartford got the most out of those final seconds, getting the ball into the box for another "penalty". This time, the soccer gods rendered appropriate judgment and Rory Skehan's spot kick rang off the left upright and was cleared.

Hanover's bright 7-0 start will be put to the sternest test of the season Saturday when Bedford comes to town. The Bulldogs are 7-1 and are also winners of seven on the trot, with their only loss of the season coming in their opener to still-unbeaten Souhegan. Stuart Pepper is an expert coach, and his young side are eager to prove themselves against the defending champs. They are familiar with the playing surface, and will come on unafraid. Kickoff time is 12:00 Noon for this must-see soccer showcase.

Marauders Top Oyster River 2-0; Six in a Row!

The Hanover High - Oyster River soccer rivalry is one of the oldest and most storied in state history. No teams in the top tiers of the NHIAA have won more championships, or been to the finals more often. Hanover has 16 titles to its credit, and Oyster River is close behind with 11. They have met in the finals four times, with the Bobcats holding a 3-1 advantage. Between 1997 and 2003, Oyster River won the Class I title five times, beating Hanover in 2001 and 2003. That's just in the Finals, folks. There have been many, many other great games in the semifinals and regular season. Prior to beating Lebanon in the Finals in 2006, Hanover dispatched OR in the semifinals 1-0 in sudden death. Even more recently, the Marauders topped the Bobcats in a shootout in the 2008 semifinals prior to winning the title against St. Thomas. The last three regular season games between the teams have been scoreless ties.

That's the back story, and it means that honoring the history of the rivalry requires nothing less than a great effort. The Bobcats came to town for the first time since 2006 and played their first game ever on Merriman-Branch Field. It was a march worthy of the legacy, with Hanover scoring two second-half goals to beat Oyster River 2-0 and stay undefeated in the current campaign with a 6-0 record.

Eric Jayne, hounded by effective man marking the entire game, showed his maturity and patience, waiting for just the right opportunity to score the game-wining goal midway through the second half, heading home the rebound of a wicked Pedro Celaya shot for his seventh goal of the season. Trey Rebman added an insurance tally with seven minutes to play, also assisted by the hard-working Celaya.

The story of the game, however, was Hanover's relentless, effective team defense. For the second Saturday in a row, the Marauders manned up against a playoff-quality opponent and shut out the opposition. The Marauder back line of Matt Barth, Robin Smith, Hayden Pressey-Murray, Connor Bentivoglio and Evan Greenwald (with a late cameo by Joe Carey) did a thorough job of containing the Bobcats and limiting them to a handful of long-range shooting attempts.

The Hanover midfield was just as effective in contributing to the clean sheet. The aforementioned Mr. Carey teamed with Ben Harris to turn the center of the park into a Bermuda Triangle for Oyster River. Their ball-winning and distribution was what gave the Marauders a territorial edge. Although the score at halftime was 0-0, there was a sense of inevitability that this advantage would manifest itself in some timely goals, as was also the case a week earlier.

The first half was not without offensive initiative, particularly by the home side. Jayne shook loose for a pair of decent looks, and his running mate Celaya was also dangerous. Ben Harris just missed connecting on a nice feed from Jayne, and freshman phenom Daniel Hazlett had a wicked drive blocked. By, um, Harris. Late in the half, Oyster River got their one legitimate opportunity when Andrew Gass, still smarting from his beating in ping pong the night before by Brendan Barth, shanked his chance on the right side of the Marauder penalty area.

It didn't take long for Hanover to start cooking in the second half. Before the first minute was gone, Eric Jayne dispossessed OR defender Brogan O'Rourke and his a hard, low shot near side that forced a diving dive from Adam Goodwin in the Bobcat net. The ball squirted loose to the right, and Jayne had a bead on it before he got hauled down. The non-call actually worked to Hanover's advantage later in the game when Bobcat striker Alex Hennessey went down in the Hanover box on a 50-50 ball. It made it much easier to swallow the whistle on that call, given the precedent that was established. That's why we hope you folks in the stands weren't too demonstrative when Jayne went down. Jayne certainly wasn't. He put his head down, got back to work, and fifteen minutes later duplicated his feat of a week ago, scoring a crucial second half goal to put Hanover ahead to stay in an important game.

The Marauders continued their second half habit of clinging to a lead by pushing hard for a second goal. Ryan Brigham, Roland Herrmann-Stanzel and Keegan Gantrish gave not just relief but energy at midfield. Ian Strohbehn and Daniel Hazlett provided some punch up front, with Hazlett creating a couple of woulda-coulda-shouldas. When Matt Barth came out with a tweaked ankle, Joe Carey slipped into his center back slot, and Jayne reprised his center midfield chores that he did so well two years ago. With nine minutes left to go, the starters came back in and pout the hammer down with Rebman's first goal of the season, aided by Celaya's fourth assist.

Oyster River kept working hard, and created some decent opportunities. The biggest challenge for Stefan Dyroff in goal, aside from a few shots that were well-struck but right at him, was a long, lofted free kick that came sailing into a crowd in the box. Dyroff determined that the ball was his, and elevated courageously to get after the ball. He was hit hard and knocked over with a fair challenge by striker Steve Luna, but left the unmistakable impression that he owned his area. It was a strong-statement by another of Hanover's big-time players.

Both teams, joined by the JV teams from both schools (with OR's crew celebrating a streak-busting 1-0 win against Hanover) gathered for a cordial BBQ picnic on the HHS Cafeteria terrace in the afternoon's warm sun. It was a nice end to a positive weekend of good soccer and generous hospitality. Thanks so much to the many families who hosted Oyster River players, and to the tireless crew who who fed well over 100 players and parents.

Hanover returns to action Tuesday night, with the Varsity travelling across the river to play Hartford at 5:30 on the Hartford High football field. The JV will stay home and play their Hurricane counterparts at Merriman-Branch Field. Kickoff time is listed for 7:00 p.m., but may be a bit later because of some tight scheduling.

Marauder JVs Win 6-0 For Five in Row

The Hanover JVs kept pace with the varsity Thursday, beating a much-improved Plymouth squad 6-0. Tomas LaPorta opened the scoring in the first half, and Rocco Linehan converted a penalty kick for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Xavier Tchana made the score 3-0 in the second half, and then Alec Murphy made good on a second spot kick. Connor Gordon and Zach Taylor added goals to bring the final tally to 6-0. The Marauders host Oyster River on Saturday at Noon on the HHS grass field.

Hanover Beats Plymouth 4-3 for Fifth in a Row

The Marauders made quick work of Plymouth High School Thursday afternoon at rain-drenched Merriman-Branch Field, bolting to 3-0 lead after 15 minutes and cruising to a 4-2 victory in a match characterized by ample playing time for everyone. In the process of running their season-opening winning streak to five games, Hanover saw 25 different players get at least 20 minutes of burn.

It didn't take long for the Marauders to get on the board. Senior Forrest Watkins celebrated his first career start at midfield by stealing a ball from a Plymouth shortly after the opening kickoff, running past a second defender, and burying a shot in the far corner for a 1-0 lead 56 seconds into the game. The Marauders kept up a steady attack, missing several other well-crafted chances, including a header by Joe Carey and a deft chip by Alex Dodds. Dodds then celebrated his first career start with even more emphasis, megging a defender on the left flank and hitting a southpaw serve right to the noggin of a streaking Eric Jayne, who deflected it into the net for his sixth goal of the season an a two-goal lead.

A brief digression on Mr. Jayne seems appropriate at this juncture. Hanover soccer is team soccer, and no one hews to that better than Eric, who is the embodiment of unselfish play. Despite this approach, the senior Captain is edging toward several significant Hanover records. His goal was the 39th of his career, tying him for second all-time with Ken Dow. Ken's older brother Bob is the career leader with 42. Eric's 11 points on the him a career total of 53, tying him for fourth all-time with Anthony Joseph. Ben Mackinnon is the all-time leader with 63. trailed by Bob Dow at 61 and Ammbi Stern with 59.

Back to the match: Three minutes after Jayne's goal, Senior Matt Barth collected his first career goal, heading home a corner kick by Watkins, who notched his first career assist. The rain continued falling and the Marauders continued raining shots on Plymouth goalie Matt Abear, who watched 16 shots fly at him and made some sweet saves, including a particular nice on on a near-post drive by Pedro Celaya. Ryan Brigham came excruciatingly close on the doorstep.

The Maraders subbed liberally in the first half, and profligately at the start of the second, with nine new starters. It took a while for things to gel, and Plymouth duplicated the Marauders' opening-minute magic. A Bobcat attacker dribbled through a porous Hanover defense, and after Alex Woods came bravely off his line to make an initial play on the ball, the slippery sphere squirted loose and spun toward the post. An unfortunate Marauder defender swiped at it in an attempt to clear, and it spun into the net for an own goal.

To their credit, the Marauders shook off this turn of events and slowly started to play coherent soccer, continuing to hold an edge in play. Ian Strohbehn and Daniel Hazlett were a dangerous combination up front, and Keegan Gantrish was a two-way threat at right midfield. During a break in the action, Gantrish observed to Hazlett that uniform numbers 17, 18 and 19 had scored in the first half. Hazlett glanced down at his number 20, winked at Gantrish, and 30 seconds later volleyed home a corner kick from him for his third goal of the season and a 4-1 lead. Hazlett has made the most of his scoring opportunities in garbage time, and could threaten the rookie record of nine set three years ago by a callow first year player nicknamed L'il Jayne.

Three minutes later, and another moment of madness. Hanover gave away a free kick at the 25 yard line, and the ball was served into the box, where it met an uncontested Hans Weber at the six yard line for a too-easy dump into the net. It was Plymouth's first and only shot on goal all afternoon.

The Marauders kept kicking. Tor Hathaway nearly missed a deflected header that drifted wide left. Pedro Celaya blazed a bad angle shot past the near post, perhaps sparing from danger his two wide-open teammates in front of the net. Brendan Barth put on an absolutely filthy dribbling display in the box, beating two defenders, waiting for the first one to catch up, beating him even more soundly a second time. and then somehow missing a near-post shot.

The win was Hanover's fifth in a row, and 17th consecutive victory stretching back exactly one year. "That means nothing," growled Grabill, "unless we show up Saturday against Oyster River." The resumption of one of the oldest and best soccer rivalries in New Hampshire history is set for a noon kickoff under sunny skies.

Marauders Win Title Game Rematch With Coe-Brown, 4-0

Hanover hit a high point in the early season with a signature 4-0 win against Coe-Brown, last year's opponent in the NHIAA Championship game. The Marauders broke open a tight and well-played contest with a second half score by Eric Jayne, and then added three goals in the final five minutes to put the game away and improve their record to 4-0.

The score is not indicative of how close and well-played the match was. Coe-Brown, easily one of the top two teams in Class I last season, had shown this season that they have re-loaded, with impressive wins against Oyster River and St. Thomas. The Bears were ready to battle toe-to-toe with Hanover, the the first half reflected this.

Game conditions were perfect, and the quality of play matched Coe-Brown's impeccable pitch, and the beautiful early Autumn weather. The first good scoring chance of the game fell to Eric Jayne, but his shot was easily handled by Bear goalkeeper Jake Carr. Most of the action remained at midfield, where Joe Carey and Ben Harris had to deal with more pressure that they had felt all season. Trey Rebman was particularly effective on the left flank, creating a number of opportunities that just fell short.

Coe-Brown's veteran attackers demonstrated the patience and skill to mount several good thrusts into the Hanover end, and late in the half Marauder keeper Stefan Dyroff was forced to make an excellent save on a low drive from the right side by striker Doug Marshall. Hanover countered with a golden chance when freshman Daniel Hazlett, fresh off the bench, got behind the Bear defense on a nice through ball but was denied by Carr at the top of the box.

Hanover turned up the heat in the second half, and had two near misses by Jayne and Pedro Celaya in the early going. Jayne was creating some good chances with his superb control in tight spaces, and twenty minutes into the half he broke the scoreless tie, taking a pass from Celaya, turning, and blasting the ball into the net for his fifth goal of the season. The best players come through when the stakes are the highest, and Jayne's goal may be remembered as a turning point of the season when this moment is recalled.

Inevitably, Coe-Brown responded with a lot of pressure, and the Hanover defense responded like champions. Matt Barth and Robin Smith had been huge in the middle of the back line, and they took their games to an even higher level, calmly tackling and dominating in the air. Hayden Pressey-Murray was rock-solid, sending ball after ball up the left touchline, and even getting in a bit of preseason basketball practice late in the game with some ball handling drills. Connor Bentivoglio had a couple of critical tackles, and Evan Greenwald gave the Marauders some valuable minutes in relief. Dyroff handled a number of ball flawlessly, and his second straight shutout was well-earned.

As Coe-Brown pushed forward, it was predictable that the Marauders would find space with which to counterattack. Jayne worked free in the Coe-Brown box and beat Carr cleanly, earning a look at an open goal, only to see his shot drift wide. With five minutes to go, though, he was back in business, earning a opportunity for a seemingly sure goal, only to dish the ball across the face of the goal to a wide-open Celaya, who rammed the ball home for a 2-0 lead. Barely a minute later, Jayne sent a through ball to a flying Celaya, and Pedro did some real magic, tightroping past two defenders before collecting his second score of the day, and fourth of the season.

Coe-Brown had two final cracks at the Hanover goal, but Kenny Bell's shot sailed high over the goal, and a free kick from close range glanced off the Marauder defensive wall and dribbled out for a subsequently harmless corner kick.

Trey Rebman and Pressey-Murray orchestrated one final trip into the Coe-Brown end of the field, and with less than a minute to play a ball that was launched into the Bears' box resulted in an own goal and the final, unbelievable margin of 4-0.

"We'll enjoy this win for what it was, and then get right back to work," commented Coach Rob Grabill. "We know that there is a lot of work left for us, and a lot of room for improvement. I'm really happy with the progress that we have made with our team defense, but there are several areas that we can tighten up."

Hanover returns to action Thursday with a home game against Plymouth at 4:30 in the cozy confines of Merriman-Branch field.

JV Continues to Roll With a 7-0 Win at Coe-Brown

The Marauder Junior Varsity continued its successful start to the season with a 7-0 victory over Coe-Brown in Northwood Saturday afternoon. The JV is now 4-0, having outscored the opposition 26-0.

Eli Connolly and Connor Gordon combined for a 2-0 lead in the first half against a capable and determined Coe-Brown crew. Gordon assisted Connolly's goal three minutes into the game, and then scored his first of two goals, assisted by Connolly, with five minutes left in the half.

The Marauders exploded for four goals in a ten-minute stretch in the second half. Freshman Rocco Linehan scored in his fourth straight game, assisted by Tomas LaPorta. Five minutes later Zach Taylor made the score 4-0 with an assist by Daniel Slayton. Tauylor then get the helper on Connor Gordon's second goal. Defender Christian Johansen closed out the onslaught with an impressive long-range blast from midfield, and then assisted the final goal by Xavier Tchana.

Hanover's airtight defense resulted in another shutout for Duncan Piper and Ryan O'Rourke.

The Marauders return to action Thursday, hosting Plymouth at 4:30.

Reserves Beat Lebanon 1-0 in Season Opener

The Hanover Reserve Boys defeated Lebanon 1-0 in the opening game of the season at The Pasture. In the fifth minutes of the match exchange student Johannes Honneth received a pass across the net quickly from Jeffry Li and blasted a shot nearly straight through the net into the upper ninety, out of the reach of the Lebanon goalie. Throughout the first half Lebanon only had one scoring chance that was easily batted away by Brendan Rhim in the Hanover net.

In the second half scoring opportunities were again few and far between for Hanover. Alex Brown and Philip Caffry both connected on headers from crosses off Oren Wilcox's feet only to have them miss high and wide. Hanover's defense was solid as a rock for the entire match. Matthew Couture was outstanding hands and feet above his cohorts, clearing nearly every ball confidently and bringing it up to mid-field and beyond when space was available. Brendan Rhim recorded his first career shutout.

The Reserves will practice Thursday and Friday from 4:00 - 5:30 at the Pasture.

Varsity Beats Unbeaten Goffstown 3-0

The Marauder Varsity improved to 3-0 on the young season by dumping visiting form the ranks of the unbeaten by a 3-0 score. The visiting Grizzlies, newcomers to Division II after dropping down from Class L play, had entered the contest with a 3-0 mark, but they were no match for the Marauders on the sun-drenched turf of Merriman-Branch Field.

Goffstown had a strong, athletic side that were well-organized and aggressive, and most of the play in the early going was at midfield. The Grizzlies never threatened, and in fact never managed a shot on goal in the first half. On the other hand, they worked hard on defense and closed Hanover down effectively for much of the half. The Marauders were patient and composed, and generated some good shots as the half wore down. Pedro Celaya authored the best of these, meeting a nice cross from Trey Rebman on the left flank and heading the ball off the crossbar. Joe Carey had a nice exploratory shot from outside the 18, and Eric Jayne worked free for another good look from long distance.

With Jayne on the bench mourning his busted Vapes and Ryan Brigham providing the fresh legs, Hanover took a 1-0 lead when Carey hit sweet lead pass from deep in midfield and Brigham ran onto it and shielded it from a Goffstown defender before lashing it into the net for a 1-0 lead and his first career goal.

The Marauders turned up the heat in the second half extending their territorial domination and threatening regularly. Forrest Pratt celebrated his birthday with two good bids, watching one of his goal-bound shots get scooped off the goal line. The Marauders went to the bench fifteen minutes into the half, and seconds later Keegan Gantrish got the ball to Eric Jayne on the right corner of the Goffstown penalty area, and the senior captain found enough daylight to hit a near-post laser for a 2-0 lead and his fourth goal of the season. Ben Harris and Brigham both had big-time bids that just missed, and Gantrish saw his delicate chip sail just wide of the upper right corner. With Brendan Barth and Roland Herrmann-Stanzel now calling the shots in the center of the park, Hanover's pressure continued, and when Roland was taken down on a run into the box, freshman Daniel Hazlett was tabbed by his mates to take the ensuing penalty. Good choice. Hazlett buried the spot kick for his second goal in two games and an insurmountable lead of 3-0.

All eyes turned to the other end of the part, and the Marauders' to earn their first clean sheet of the season. Goffstown made them work for it. Robin Smith and Matt Barth were highly effective in the center of the defense, and they got good help from Hayden Pressey-Murray, Connor Bentivoglio, and eventually Charlie Umland and Evan Greenwald. All six backs contributed, and Stefan Dyroff was solid in goal behind them, making several good saves to earn his first shutout of the season.

Hanover made one final bid for a fourth goal on a great run by Charlie Umland, culminating in a deft shot by Alex Dodds that just missed the target.

"This was a positive step forward," commented Coach Grabill."Goffstown was the best team we have faced so far, and we were able to rise to the occasion. We played our best team defense of the season, and got good play from all 22 players who got into the game. Our depth helped us win this game."

Next up for the Marauders is a much sterner challenge on Saturday. Hanover travels to Northwood to face Coe-Brown in a rematch of last season's Class I Championship match. Despite a shocking Tuesday loss to 3-0 Pelham, Coe-Brown has posted some impressive results, with wins over Oyster River and St. Thomas, the later by an eye-popping 5-0 margin. They will be the most highly-motivated opponent the Marauders will be likely to face all season, and that's saying a lot, given the intensity of many of Hanover's rivals. "I wish we were at full strength for this match," commented Grabill alluding to the ongoing absence of Isaiah Fariel, whose recovery from an ankle injury is nevertheless progressing well. "On the other hand, we have had seven different players find the back of the net, and our depth up front is evident. We'll have to play well at both ends. This should be a great game".

JV Soccer Beats Goffstown 10-0

The JV soccer team beat Goffstown 10-0 on Wednesday, running their record to 3-0 on the young season. Goffstown had entered the match with a 3-0, but were no match for the yellow-clad Marauders.

Zach Taylor opened the scoring, an then Rocco Linehan picked up the first of his two goals, assisted by Daniel Hernandez, who made an excellent lead pass for him. Xavi Tchana made the score 3-0, assisted by Alec Murphy. Drake Greenwood scored his first goal of the season, and Connor Godon closed out the first half scoring.

Tchana tallied his second goal to begin the second half goal parade, followed by Linehan's second of the day and fifth of the season. Rocco then assisted on Xavi's second tally to make the score 8-0. Sophomore Peter Bensen converted a pass from Jacob LaPoint to make the score 9-0, and Liam Gantrish got the final marker, assisted by Eli Connolly.

Duncan Piper and Ryan O'Rourke shared the shutout in goal.

The JVs return to action Saturday, travelling to Coe-Brown. Departure time for that match will be 8:00 a.m.

This proposal was made originally in July and the response was swift and generous, prompting the offer the Oyster River and their quick acceptance. Here is the timetable:

6:00 p.m. Pick up players at Lebanon high school after their games (and after HHS practice, so our players will be available at that time)

Supper at the homes of the host families, followed by typical low-key Friday night pre-game stuff: Movies, TV, FIFA 2011, ping-pong at Barths', etc.

Saturday

This should be a great way to make these games into a special event with the help of one of our oldest and most respected rivals.

Hanover JVs Beat John Stark 6-0

The Marauder Junior Varsity saw success on their first road trip of the season, beating John Stark 6-0 in a match that featured ample playing time for everyone on the squad.
Alex Pratt led off the scoring, slotting home a penalty after a hand ball in the box.
John Start could only contain scoring juggernaut Rocco Linehan only so long, and the eagle-eyed freshman converted a pass from Alec Murphy for a 2-0 advantage. Grizzled veteran Eli Connolly made it 3-0 following a corner kick, and that score stood at halftime.

The Marauders kept the pressure on in the second half, with Xavier Tchana scoring twice, the first goal assisted by Daniel Slayton, and the second by Lightning linemate Linehan. Peter Benson capped the second half scoring, assisted by hockey amigo Connor Gordon.

The JVs will enjoy a three-day weekend, and resume their toil on the HHS grass field at 4:00 on Tuesday.

Hanover Rolls on the Road to Beat John Stark 4-1

The first road trip of the regular season was a successful one for the Marauders, who scored twice in each half to earn a 4-1 victory over John Stark. Four different players scored for Hanover, now 2-0 on the young season.

Hanover got off to a good start nine minutes into the match. A John Stark defender staggered under one of Stefan Dyroff's monstrous punts, and headed the ball backwards over his endline. The Marauders instantly punished the mistake, as Joe Carey headed in Trey Rebman's corner kick for his second goal in two games.

The well-coached Generals stiffened their defense, and although Hanover enjoyed a huge territorial edge (the first half shot totals were 13-0), they didn't score until the half was nearly over. Carey, Ben Harris and Eric Jayne had all created good looks at the goal, with one of Harris longer shots just whistling over the bar. But the insertion of fresh legs gave the Marauders a lift. Keegan Gantrish, Ryan Brigham and Daniel Hazlett were all instrumental in turning up the heat, and with less than two minutes to play Hazlett scored his first career goal, redirecting a centering lass from Eric Jayne to give Hanover an important 2-0 lead.

If John Stark was fazed by the late score in the first half, they didn't show it, pulling a goal back three minutes into the second half with some excellent soccer. A John Stark defender intercepted an incautious pass at midfield and sent the ball deep into the Hanover end. General midfielder Steve Johnstone made a great move to get free on the left baseline, and drove to the goal, drawing a defender and serving a great ball to the foot of striker Josh Morin. Morin his a first-time drive that was labeled for the right corner, only to be denied by a diving save by Stefan Dyroff. Scott Morin was first to the rebound, and drove it into the back of the net to put the home team back into the game.

Now it as Hanover's turn to show composure, and they responded magnificently. Strong defensive play by Robin Smith and Matt Barth put the clamps on any further comeback hopes by John Stark, and the Marauders took the play into their offensive third. Harris, Carey and Jayne all continued their forays, and would eventually tally 21 shots between them. The best of these was a turnaround shot by Harris from the edge of the penalty area that rang off the upright. Their work was rewarded midway through the half on another corner kick. Rebman's drive was headed onto the bar by an onrushing Matt Barth, and the rebound fell to the feet of Ben Harris, who happily opened his account with his first goal of the season, giving Hanover a 3-1 lead that looked and felt safe.

The Marauders then flaunted their depth, as Brigham and Gantrish returned to the flanks at midfield, and Hazlett took over up top. That trio was joined minutes later by the central midfield duo of Roland Herrmann-Stanzel and Brendan Barth, and those five subs put a charge into Hanover's game, creating a number of good-looking scoring opportunities. With six minutes to play, Hazlett squirted by a defender on the left flank and drove to the baseline, hitting a scorching left-footed centering pass that zipper through the goal box before it met Gantrish at the right post for a tap-in and another first career goal. Brendan Barth almost put a cap on the game a few minutes later, just missing a far post header. He spent the rest of the match uttering G-rated invective and apologizing to everyone within earshot.

The final totals saw Hanover outshot John Stark 29-4, and enjoy an edge in corner kicks of 11-0. Those statistics accurately reflect the match, which was satisfying to the coaching staff but less so to many of the players, who felt frustrated that they hadn't played as well as they wanted. That sentiment was admirable, although after two matches it is clear that the Marauders are making progress. Last year after four matches, Hanover had scored six goals. They have ten in their first two this time around, and their defense is getting tigher every day.

That defense will be tested on Tuesday when 3-0 Goffstown comes to Hanover. Having dropped down from Class L, the Manchester-area school has had little trouble in their first three games (having beaten John Stark 3-1), and they will be riding high. "This is exactly the sort of test we need," opined Coach Grabill. "They are a big, strong team with a lot of depth and athleticism. If we can move the ball quickly on them, we should be successful. This will be our toughest test to date." Kickoff is at 4:00 at Merriman-Branch Field.

Norwich Soccer Facility Named!

The Dresden Athletic Fields on Rt. 5 in Norwich have been re-named after extensive research and a well-subscribed naming contest. The winner is......

"The Pasture"

From now on, all media references to this facility will refer to The Pasture. The name fits in many ways. Situated behind the Farmer's Market, it is in keeping with the agrarian nature of the neighborhood. The grass is cut regularly, but is nevertheless often too long for the excessively demanding coaching staff, which plaintively compares it to a hay field. And of course, it is the primary stomping ground for Hanover's Grade A soccer studs. The Pasture. It is almost reminiscent of Stanford University's nickname, The Farm.

The winning entry was submitted by sophomore ruminant Ryan O'Rourke, who will be suitably rewarded.

Hanover Travels to John Stark Friday

The Marauder Varsity and JV travel to Weare Friday afternoon for 4:15 matches with John Stark High School. The teams are dismissed at 2:00 p.m. and will depart no later than 2:15 sharp. We are still looking for volunteer parents to provide the snacks for the JV bus. Players may ride home from the match with their parents or other parents, with prior written permission provided to the Athletic Office.

All HHS teams will have Saturday and Sunday off. The Varsity will train Monday on the HHS turf from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
